Erin Gruwell
          

Erin Gruwell is the teacher who took it upon herself to not only educate her students (who were highly involved in the gang life of Long Beach, CA) in English, but also in more important life lessons. She taught them tolerance, responsibility, and how to overcome the obstacles in their life. I may not end up working in an inner-city school, and I may not end up with a very diverse group of students, but I hope that I can change just one life in the way that she changed so many. I hope that I am not only a teacher of music for the year or two the students are in my classroom, but a teacher who will help them learn lessons that will last a lifetime.
